Security guard training in Illinois can vary dependent on employer requirements, but before you even begin looking for a job as a security guard you will be required by the state to obtain a PERC Card. This special PERC card (Permanent Employee Registration Card) is basically what the employer uses to confirm you’ve passed essential background checks that clear you for work in a security position.

In order to obtain the card you will need to meet the following requirements:
- ñ You must be at least 18 years of age to apply.
- ñ You must provide your social security number.
- ñ Must provide a photo.
- ñ You will be required to pay a fee of $55 for the application.
- ñ Must have a record free of felonies.
- ñ You must submit security clearance documents obtained through a fingerprinting process.
In order to get the security clearance, you must go through a Livescan Certified Vendor. A list of locations can be found on the PERC application.
Once you you have your PERC card you may start applying for unarmed positions. Keep in mind that employer’s may have additional requirements, though. Security guard training in Illinois usually involves 20 hours in an acceptable training program.
Courses that will satisfy this requirement can be found at local community colleges or technical schools.
Keep in mind that security guard training in Illinois is much stricter if you are interested in working as an armed guard.
You will need to meet all the same requirements for an unarmed guard, but will also need to meet a few additional requirements:
- You will need to be a US citizen or legal resident alien.
- You must be at least 21 years of age.
- Passport and Illinois driver’s license.
- Successfully pass rigorous training program.
The training requirement initially looks similar to that of an unarmed guard, requiring 20 hours of training. In addition to these 20 hours surrounding issues like writing reports, dealing with the public, and ethics, you will also need 20 more hours in firearm training. Each qualified candidate must fire 50 rounds from their handgun with an accuracy of at least 70%.
Security guard training in Illinois requires both a PERC card and many firms require multiple hours of training, but ultimately even though it requires you to go through a few hoops, it can create a very rewarding career in the end.
